This study investigates the application of Ikonos Very High Resolution (VHR) images to habitat mapping in the rugged terrain of Hong Kong’s country parks. A required mapping scale of 1:10 000, a minimum map object size of 150 m2 on the ground, and a minimum accuracy level of 80 percent were set as the mapping standards. Very high quality aerial photographs and digital topographic maps provided accurate reference data for the image processing and habitat classification. A comparison between manual stereoscopic aerial photographic interpretation and image classification using pixel-based and object-based classifiers was carried out. The Multi-level Object Oriented Segmentation with Decision Tree Classification (MOOSC) was devised during this study using a suite of image processing techniques to integrate spectral, textural, and spatial criteria with ancillary data. Manual mapping from air photos combined with fieldwork obtained the best result, with 95 percent overall accuracy, but both this and the MOOSC method, with 94 percent, easily met the 80 percent specified accuracy standard. The MOOSC method was able to achieve similar accuracy aerial photographs, but at only one third of the cost.

Application of High-resolution Satellite Images in Forestry and Habitat Mapping - Evaluation of Ikonos Images through a Hungarian Case Study
The launch of Ikonos satellite at the end of September 1999 marked the beginning of a new era for the application of satellite images. Being able to provide up to one-metre resolution panchromatic and four-metre resolution multispectral images, thus available in the past for military purposes or from aerial surveys only, this satellite offers considerable improvements and broadens the applicati...
متن کاملImage fusion of Ikonos pan and multispectral images for classification of the urban environment
The paper compares different data fusion techniques in order to choose an appropriate technique for accurate urban mapping. Availability of high spatial resolution Ikonos and Quickbird imagery has made accurate mapping of urban areas more feasible. Though Ikonos multispectral images have a good spatial resolution of 4 m, it is often desirable to have an increased spatial resolution for a more a...
متن کاملTopographic Correction for Differential Illumination Effects on Ikonos Satellite Imagery
The problem of differential terrain illumination on satellite imagery has been investigated for at least 20 years and has not been solved satisfactorily. Most past research has been conducted on Landsat imagery where the look angle is nadir. There is no research on topographic correction of IKONOS imagery, which has a higher spatial resolution. The high spatial resolution of IKONOS imagery requ...
متن کاملCoastal Mapping and Change Detection Using High-Resolution IKONOS Satellite Imagery
Shoreline mapping and shoreline change detection are critical in many coastal zone applications. This paper presents results of the semi-automatic mapping of a coastal area of Lake Erie using 4-meter resolution multispectral (XS) and 1-meter resolution panchromatic (Pan) IKONOS Geo stereo images. An overview of the geometric processing of IKONOS imagery is presented. Then, the latest results of...
متن کاملUrban Land Cover Mapping Using Object/pixel-based Data Fusion and Ikonos Images
The use of high resolution IKONOS imagery should make it possible to extract urban features like buildings and roads more easily than conventional satellite image data. This work examines the synergetic ability of using spectral information from multispectral data in combination with spatial information from panchromatic data in urban land cover mapping using IKONOS Imagery. In this work we tri...
